Producers of the most popular podcast in history announced two new seasons Wednesday, beginning this fall.

“We are hard at work reporting not one, but two distinct new stories,” “Serial” producers said in a newsletter email sent to subscribers. The second season will launch in the fall, while the third will begin in the spring. Producers said neither case will involve the show’s initial examination of a 1999 conviction of high school senior Adnan Syed who was charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee.

The weekly podcast enraptured millions when it debuted in October 2014 as “Serial” host and creator Sarah Koenig re-examined the evidence to question whether Syed, who’s currently serving a life sentence, was guilty or innocent.

Last week, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals agreed to remand Syed’s case to a Baltimore trial court “for additional fact-finding.”

“Serial” is an offshoot of “This American Life” and co-produced by WBEZ in Chicago.
